Heart Health Month: New Olive Oils from Organic Roots

By: Allison Carpenter; Community Outreach

Hello everyone,

In celebration of Heart Health Month February, we are bringing in some great new olive oils from Organic Roots. Organic Roots is an up and coming family owned business. They farm and cultivate their own olives and produce extra virgin olive oil from their harvest. Their olive oil comes in three distinct flavors: Arbequina, Arbosana, and Koronekei.

Organic Roots olives are cultivated from Polit Farms, a family owned farm with roots dating back 100 years and originally a cattle and dairy ranch. In 1983, Polit Farms was officially born when the family began producing organic rice. A short time later, organic olives were planted with the intent on producing authentic Extra Virgin Olive Oil. In 2012, Organic Roots was formed.

The family’s passion for creating a high quality, flavorful olive oil true to the extra virgin name is evident. Organic Roots is “born from the belief that great EVOO shouldn’t be an ocean away”. They are on a mission to “to change the organic EVOO industry” by bringing to the market a truly authentic and honest Extra Virgin olive oil.

Come on in and try this wonderfully aromatic, all organic olive oil—free from impurities. We will be doing a demo for this olive oil on February 4th around 11am.

Going Back to Our Roots: Tiger Nuts, the Original Root Vegetable

By: Allison Carpenter, Community Outreach

Great news for all you Paleo fans! We just got in some great new Paleo products! Organic Gemini’s Tiger Nut products!

In case you’ve never heard of a Tiger Nut, don’t be fooled by their name! Tiger Nuts are not actually a nut, but a tuber—a small root vegetable. Tiger Nuts are found at the end of the root system of Cyperus grass (Cyperus  esculentus L.) and originate from Niger, Africa. According to an Oxford University study, these tubers comprised up to 80% of our Paleo ancestor’s diet around 2 million years ago, and since then have been used in ancient Egypt, Spain (Horchata, a Spanish beverage, was originally crafted from tiger nuts, not rice, seeds, or nuts), and are now grown in the modern world for a wide variety of purposes. These tasty little tubers are packed with nutrients, including tons of resistant starch, a prebiotic fiber that resists digestion and becomes fuel for probiotic bacteria in the gut (one serving contains 10 g of dietary fiber). Not only that, but they have as much iron as red meat and as much potassium as coconut water!

Berryvale is now carrying Tiger Nut Raw Snack, Tiger Nut Flour, and Tiger Nut oil. The nuts themselves have a sweet nutty taste, and the flour is great for baking paleo or allergen friendly baked goods with a similar texture to almond meal. The Tiger Nut oil is cold pressed with a 460 degree smoke point, has a neutral flavor, and is rich in vitamin E. Tiger Nut oil was first used 4,000 years ago by the Egyptians for medicinal purposes and is now known to have higher Oleic Acid content than Olive Oil. All Tiger Nut products produced by Organic Gemini are USDA Organic, Non-GMO Project Verified, raw, kosher, and vegan and paleo friendly.

So come on in and grab some today!

Non-GMO Month October!

By: Allison Carpenter, Community Outreach
October is Non-GMO month! What’s Non-GMO month you ask? Non-GMO month is a campaign that was launched in 2010 by the Non-GMO Project in order to spread wider awareness of the Non-GMO Project, concerns of GMOs and the efforts of individuals and groups on right to know legislation, and legislation that could take away our right to know.

According to Non-GMO project:  “Every October, Non-GMO Month provides a powerful opportunity to coordinate our voices and our actions. Across North America brands, retailers and individuals stand up for our right to know what’s in our food, and to choose non-GMO.”

We use the phrase “Look for the Butterfly”. If you see the Non-GMO logo—epitomized by an orange Butterfly—on a product in store, you can trust that the product has passed a stringent and highly detailed testing and verification process:

From the Non-GMO Project Website:

What does “Non-GMO Project Verified seal” mean?

The verification seal indicates that the product bearing the seal has gone through our verification process. Our verification is an assurance that a product has been produced according to consensus-based best practices for GMO avoidance:
  • We require ongoing testing of all at-risk ingredients—any ingredient being grown commercially in GMO form must be tested prior to use in a verified product.
  • We use an Action Threshold of 0.9%. This is in alignment with laws in the European Union (where any product containing more than 0.9% GMO must be labeled). Absence of all GMOs is the target for all Non-GMO Project Standard compliant products. Continuous improvement practices toward achieving this goal must be part of the Participant’s quality management systems.
  • After the test, we require rigorous traceability and segregation practices to be followed in order to ensure ingredient integrity through to the finished product.
  •  For low-risk ingredients, we conduct a thorough review of ingredient specification sheets to determine absence of GMO risk.
  • Verification is maintained through an annual audit, along with onsite inspections for high-risk products.
Want to know more about Non-GMO month? Visit the Non-GMO month website, or come into Berryvale and pick up our informational materials located on our magazine rack near the cafe. We’ll be there to greet you and answer questions you have about Non-GMO verified products. We’ll also have featured Non-GMO verified products throughout the month, and tote bag giveaways stuffed with goodies! Don’t miss it!

Stay tuned for more blogs and social media posts about Non-GMO and the Non-GMO Project!

Reopening and New Store Shelving!

By Allison Carpenter; Community Outreach

Hello everyone! Well, it’s the BIG day! Our reopening after being closed for a whole day! Did you miss us?

We missed you! We are so happy to share with you all these beautiful updates that our crew worked so hard to bring together. What better way to tell the story than with photos:

First, we had to remove all of the products off of our shelves.

After this, we disassembled the old shelves and deep cleaned our floors. Surprise, Surprise! Rolaids? When have we ever sold Rolaids?

Next, we assembled the new shelves and placed them on the floor.

Then, we diligently gave the store a good deep clean. Employees from each department went to work removing product. Everything from produce to the café was scrubbed and polished.

We’re almost done! Our next step was reorganizing the shelves with the help of our supplier, UNFI, who guided us on product placement. These professionals really know how to organize a grocery store!

And finally, we put everything back in place, replaced our old signage and shelf tags, and put on all the finishing touches.

And that’s it! We hope you enjoy our new look and layout! Let us know what you think and don’t be shy about asking our staff where to find your favorite foods and brands!

New products: Dua Dua Coconut Products

By: Allison Carpenter; Community Outreach

Great news for all you coconut lovers out there; we have new coconut products in our grocery department from Dua Dua Coconut Products. Dua Dua is a sustainable company with their process starting in a small village in the Solomon Islands, South Pacific where the coconuts are picked and then shipped to Portland to be processed in small batches into several types of coconut products ranging from raw oil, a decadent syrup, to soaps and detergent. According to Dua Dua, they “are 3rd generation Coconut farmers [who] decided to increase employment opportunities for local villagers via downstream processing of coconut products.  [They] provide high quality, natural, healthy coconut based products while providing income opportunities that would not otherwise exist and for the remote villagers of Solomon Islands, South Pacific.”

Dua Dua Coconut Products use pure raw coconut oil sourced from high quality, cruelty free organic coconuts and is extracted through a centrifuge process that doesn’t heat the oil above 113 degree F, making this a truly raw oil. Great for those of you on the paleo or anyone simply looking to eat cleaner, healthier fats. Coconut oil is loaded with LCFAs, one of the most nutritious types of fats out there, and has long been regarded as a sacred food by indigenous peoples where coconut has naturally grown for thousands of years.

All in all, we love that this company is working towards sustainability, environmentally and economically, while simultaneously producing pure organic and all natural coconut products that are safe and effective. We’re carrying Dua Dua Raw Coconut oil in 16 oz jars, Dua Dua all natural Laundry Bar & Stain Remover, and Dua Dua Bulk Laundry detergent.

Check them out in our grocery department and let us know what you think about this product and the brand in the comments below!

Our Picks and Tips for School Lunch

By: Allison Carpenter; Community Outreach

School is almost back in session! And that means….duh duh duh….lunch.

It's no secret among my friends that I am a huge advocate for a home packed lunch. As parents, we are naturally concerned with the nutrition content of our children’s food and whether or not they are eating the right amounts of it. Packing a lunch puts us more in control of what our children eat. Furthermore, allowing our kids to be a part of the packing and picking process makes them more excited about eating their food.

We here at Berryvale understand the concerns of parents. Parents want to give their kids the nutrition they need, but don’t want them to hate their food. Our children, just like us, want to feel good about the foods they put in their body. So with the help of our Grocery Buyer, Mariah, we have put together our top picks for school lunches, along with some tips to help pick the right mix of foods.

Mix it up and Educate!

Children need balanced nutrition. Mixing up their lunches with a variety of food groups makes their lunch more balanced. Consider a protein, carbohydrate, healthy fats, fruit, and veggies. In produce, we have broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini, carrot sticks, celery, avocado, and cherry tomatoes. You can add leafy greens to sandwiches or to homemade berry smoothies (made with Earthbound frozen organic Mixed Berries found in the freezer section). Bananas and apples are always a favorite with young children. We have bags of pink lady apples on sale that make buying apples inexpensive and easy. For dairy, we offer Organic Valley Stringles string cheese—a personal favorite of my daughter—or varieties of yogurts.

Talking with your children about nutrition and teaching them along the way helps them understand why they eat the foods they do. Explaining the power and impact that food has on our bodies and the way proper nutrition can give us the fuel we need to do the things we love will resonate with your kids. Make education fun by using analogies your child can understand at their unique stage in development. As parents, we have so much power in how our children perceive the world around them, and our most powerful tool is education.

Pick What Your Kids love!

What do your kids love? Do they love Pb&J? Turkey sandwiches? Avocados? Cherry tomatoes? Apples? Bananas? Ask them what their favorite food is in each food group and add it to your shopping list. We carry many healthy offerings, including varieties of organic jams, nut and seed butters, cereals, organic produce, dairy products, raw and dehydrated foods, organic and all natural lunch meats, eggs, and breads. Best of all, we do our best to mix up our sales to help make these products more affordable. If your child has certain food allergies, look for alternatives such as sunflower seed butter, gluten free breads and yogurts made with coconut milk. We carry a wide assortment of foods for a variety of dietary needs; from gluten and dairy free, nut free, vegan, to paleo.

Make it Healthy, But Give Them a Treat

Including something sweet doesn’t have to make you feel uncertain and guilty. Add treats that are healthy and well-rounded without additives and laboratory ingredients. Choose, for example, sweetened nut butters like Justin’s Chocolate Hazlenut Butter, or chunks of dark chocolate added to a mixture of nuts and seeds for a yummy trail mix. This month, Uncle Eddies Cookies are on sale, with plenty of options from chocolate chip, peanut butter, and oatmeal. We also have on sale Qia nutrition bars in varieties of kid friendly flavors, and Annies organic Bunny Fruit Snacks. If you would prefer to limit sugar, check out our bulk bins and dehydrated fruits, or our assortment of raw treats made with purer sweeteners like honey, dates or fruit juice. Hail Mary’s, found in the refrigerated section, has some tasty tarts and macaroons that are vegan and gluten and dairy free, and are, best of all, kid friendly.

Pack a Well Rounded Snack

I don’t know about you, but around mid-morning I get hungry; and of course so do our kids! A well rounded, healthy snack in between meals can boost energy and help your kids make it to lunch time without uncomfortable hunger pains. That, and with the proper nutrition, can give your kids the concentration they need to focus on school work. Choosing proteins, such as nuts (check out our bulk section!), cheese, yogurt, or nutritional drinks (such as Orgain Healthy Kids Nutritional Shakes), and adding them to your child’s lunch pack for a snack offers your child a well-rounded nutritional boost at a much needed time.

Have Fun!

Making fun shapes out of lunch foods and letting your kids be a part of the preparation process makes lunch fun for them! To make it even easier on yourself, you can prepare the lunch in the evenings before bed and leave it in the fridge for your kids to grab in the morning.

You can, for example, make PB&J “sushi”, spell out fun messages with sauces, prepare a homemade treat and wrap it in something special, add a special note, or cut your simple lunch dishes into fun shapes. Getting creative makes lunch time fun for kids and encourages them to eat every last bite. What would you rather eat: a boring carrot stick on a lunch tray or a carrot “octopus” crafted by your loving and doting parent?

Lunch doesn’t have to be boring or stressful. You’ll find the more time you take carefully choosing foods your child loves and exploring ways to make lunch more exciting for them will actually reduce the amount of stress you feel over your child’s lunch. Working with and teaching your child to prepare their foods with you can be a great bonding experience and teaches kids valuable life skills in a way that brings them joy and warm memories.

Well, that's it for now. Although with this topic there is so much information to share! Now we'd like to hear from you. What are your child’s favorite lunch foods? What combination of foods do you pack your child to give them the well-rounded nutrition they need? What treats do you add to your child’s lunchbox? And what of these products have you tried and how did you like them?

Comment below and let us know!

Thanks for reading our blog. Hopefully we gave you some ideas and some food for thought!
