Seasonal Produce for the Holidays

By: Heather Collier, Produce

Come check out our wide selection of locally grown organic winter squash and other produce for your Thanksgiving meals!

From Mountain View Organics farm in Grenada, CA, we have Butternut, Acorn, and Red Kuri squash. Mountain View Organics is a family-owned farm that has been operating for about 10 years. The owner Jeff, his wife and two sons do almost all of the farming. They grow summer and winter squash, melons, tomatoes, and cucumbers which they sell at Berryvale throughout the year and at the Mount Shasta farmer's market in the summers.

From Hunter's Orchard farm in Grenada, CA, we have Sugar Pie Pumpkins, Heirloom Apples, as well as Kabocha, Carnival, and Buttercup squash. Hunter's Orchard is under new ownership, and this has been their second season. The land at Hunter's Orchard has been Certified Organic for 20 years and the farm is now owned by a couple who purchased the farm in January, 2015. Berryvale carried many of their items this year and will continue to support them and carry their produce next year.

Some of the produce items we are carrying from the Rogue Valley, OR, area include Delicata squash, Garlic, Red Kale, Turnips, Celery Root, and Bosc Pears.
We are also carrying Fuyu Persimmons from Chico, CA and local Chestnuts grown here in Mount Shasta.

On top of all of the beautifully colored, locally grown Fall produce, we have an assortment of root vegetables, greens, lettuces, apples and fruits, mushrooms, grapes, cherries, and more! Seasonal, fresh holiday are herbs are in as well and are perfect flavorful complements to any holiday dish; we have sage, rosemary, thyme, tarragon, majoram, chives, and a holiday mix. See for yourself our wide range of select organic produce and transform your holiday table into an abundant, colorful, and healthful center piece this Thanksgiving.

Seasonal Beverage: Pumpkin Beers!

By: Katie Grandy; Beverage Buyer

This weekend I learned a new trick that really helped enhance my pumpkin beer experience. I simply chilled a pint glass, and then rolled the rim in a cinnamon and brown sugar mix.  It was so good! I already love pumpkin beer this time of year, but this tasted like a little bit of pumpkin pie in every sip.

For this occasion, we have several really good pumpkin beers in stock through November. They are located on the end cap, with other seasonal items. The Rogue farms Pumpkin beer, Pumpkin Patch Ale—in its cheerfully orange bottle—is just one of our selections. I always taste a slight sourness to good pumpkin beers—similar to a flavor profile I get in pumpkin pie—and this profile is slightly evident here, with lots of spice in the flavor. This beer holds up to the Rogue standards, and you will not be disappointed.

The next kind of pumpkin beer we have is by The American River Brewing Company; Pumpkin Falls. This one, I must admit, is my favorite. It is light to medium in body with a sharp, lively bite from the carbonation, and goes down crisp and clean.  There are strong notes of pumpkin and cinnamon spice upfront and throughout. Nutmeg and earth hit moderately toward the finish. An ever so distant spice bite, like Red Hots, lingers in the finish.

Lastly we have the Dogfish Head Pumpkin Ale. This is a full on, simultaneous assault of all the flavors: strong pumpkin and nutmeg flavors, with mild flavors of cinnamon and brown sugar, and subtle caramel flavors (these are a pleasant addition that weren't detected in the smell). As the flavors begin to fade, cinnamon lingers, leaving a nice aftertaste. This is an award winning pumpkin beer, and it is not hard to see why when you try it!

Please enjoy, and try different flavor combos on the rim of your glass and let me know what your favorite one is!

Trimmer’s Delight: Northbound Coffee Roasters Seasonal Dark Roast

By: Caleb Gress, Bulk Buyer

Northbound Coffee Roasters recently brought us their seasonal dark roast, Trimmer’s Delight. This single-origin coffee is comprised of a naturally processed Ethiopian Yirgacheffe and makes a cup that is bold and rich with hints of dark chocolate.

The seasonal dark roasts offered by Northbound, Trimmer’s Delight and Happy Camper, are made with one kind of bean (single-origin).  Trimmer’s Delight is available October through March and Happy Camper is available April through September.

“We just keep finding really nice individual coffees that taste really good at that darker roast profile,” Keith Hamrick of Northbound shared with us.

This fall, the beans from Trimmer’s Delight are sourced  from Halo Bariti, one of the newest cooperatives in Ethiopia, where this indigenous, heirloom variety is grown above 5,200 feet in elevation. The 225 farmers who contribute to the cooperative grow in a remote, undeveloped area of Ethiopia.

For this naturally processed bean, the ripe, red cherry is delivered by co-op members to their drying tables, where it is then hand sorted and raked for even drying over the course of 10-15 days.

Keith told us that this natural process makes for a heavy bodied and fruity coffee, especially with a dark roast where it is caramelized to bring out the notes of chocolate and blackberry.

You’ll find Trimmer’s Delight in 12 ounce bags and the  bulk bins in our coffee section.
