Produce: Last Chance for a Taste of Local Summer

By: Crystal Bornmann, Produce Manager, and Allison Carpenter, Community Outreach

We all love to love and appreciate the flavors of local in season produce. There is nothing quite like the sweet flavor of a summer melon, fresh from off a nearby farm. Summer is coming to a close, and that means many of our summer seasonal favorites from our local suppliers will be over and done. So get them while you can!

Here’s what we have: our local melons are the Sharlyn and the papaya dew, which are grown in Grenada by Mountain View Organics. The papaya dew looks like an orange honey dew and tastes very similar. The flesh is orange and firm; the flavor is very sweet. Sharlyns are white on the inside and have a very sweet/musky flavor. We also have ambrosia melons and orchid melons from Full Belly Farm, which is about 3 hours south of here in Guinda, California. The ambrosia melon is orange flesh, very sweet and unique in flavor. The orchids are a type of yellow watermelon, sweet, great texture and very juicy.

Although the cherry tomatoes are not local, they are a summer time favorite of many. By next week we will have local regular tomatoes from Mountain View Organics. Right now we have their zephyr and gold bar squash, zucchini, lemon cucumbers and cucumbers. We will only have one or two more deliveries of their cucumbers and then they are done for the season. We also have their fresh red onions.

From Ashland, Oregon—through Organic Produce Warehouse—we have yellow peaches and Bartlett pears from Valley View Orchard. This particular distributor has been supplying us with local red kale and will be supplying us with local cucumbers next week since Mountain View Organics is almost done.

Mountain View Organics will be our main supplier for winter squash in the next few weeks and through the fall.

Purple cauliflower is few and far between. We get it on Wednesdays from Veritable Vegetable if it’s available. We have dragon fruit, which is rare and grown in California as well as passion fruit. Reed avocados are the king of avocados and in peak season right now. They are creamy and have a wonderful flavor that is not comparable to any avocado.

As always, we have Lava Oasis Micro Greens, which will be available up into the end of Fall. These have been very much a customer favorite.

Well that’s it from the Produce side of things. We hope this will help you when you are looking for the last of in season summer produce from our local distributors. Very soon we will be bringing in our fall produce. Stay tuned and remember to enjoy and love the summer produce while you still can!

Café News: Organicos Gluten Free Bread

By Allison Carpenter; Community Outreach

If you’re like many Americans, you enjoy a good sandwich. Sandwiches in and of themselves are the epitome of the American lunch. But if you find yourself sensitive to gluten or have celiac disease, than a sandwich might just be out of the question. Sure, many brands have tried to create the perfect gluten free bread, but more often than not we wind up disappointed with the flavor and texture. Opening yourself up to pay that often $10 or more price tag for a loaf of bread you might just hate lowers the incentive to gamble and try another brand that claims to have gotten it right, leaving you without a piece of bread for your sandwich and making it, well, not a sandwich.

At the Berryvale Café, they have been trying to crack this code for a while. After trying and tasting bread after bread, they’ve finally figured it out! The Berryvale Cafe is excited to introduce a truly delicious gluten free bread alternative; Organicos Multi-grain Bread. Speaking as a person that is very sensitive to gluten, I have had to avoid the café; every time I’d walk by, I’d smell the delicious smell of sandwiches grilling and my taste buds would cry a little.

Today, I was prompted by our cafe manager, Jennifer, to try the bread on a sandwich. She told me I wouldn’t regret it. So I took the plunge and gave it a try and I didn’t! I did the “build your own sandwich” and ordered a grilled turkey sandwich with avocado, lettuce, tomato, onion, and veganaise. The taste and flavor was perfect! I could hardly tell I wasn’t eating the real deal. There was a slight flavor to the bread that is not found in regular sandwich bread that I found very hearty and savory. It has a real robust, wheat-bread-like texture that is unlike any gluten free bread I have ever tasted and paired perfectly with the grilled turkey and avocado. Normally with gluten free bread, the bread dissolves in the mouth and lacks the porous, grainy texture of regular bread, but not Organicos. I can only attribute this to Organicos’ explanation that it “derives its old world texture and dark coloration from the addition of buckwheat flour and black strap molasses.” This multi-grain bread does not fall short of its name.

This bread is topped with some yummy seeds that add to the bread’s robust flavor while not taking away from its bread-like texture, as many regular seeded breads do. Indeed, this bread surpassed all expectations I had. On top of that, this bread is vegan—egg and dairy free—making it an overall win win! And now, best of all, I no longer have to dodge the delicious café smells of grilled sandwiches while working my shift.

If you have a gluten sensitivity or celiacs, or are just avoiding gluten for other reasons, I highly recommend this scrumptious bread! Try it on our many delicious sandwiches; the Grilled Turkey Pesto, the Berryvale Rueben, the Tuna Melt, Grilled Cheese, Cold Tuna, or the Veggie Sandwich. Or you could build your own sandwich for a truly unique sandwich experience. Just be sure that when you order your sandwich, you request the gluten free bread option. It only costs $.50 extra and is well worth it!

New Product in Chill: Pitaya Dragonfruit Smoothie Packs!

By: Taylor Silva; Chill Buyer

Hi everyone! My name is Taylor and I am the Chill buyer here at Berryvale. At the beginning of June I attended a food show in Portland, OR., where I first came across the Pitaya Smoothie Packs. The salesmen were extremely friendly and believed 100% in their product, but what really caught my eye was their sustainable, pedal bike powered blender. Pretty cool, right?

Pitaya fruit was first discovered hundreds of years ago in Central America, it was then brought by missionaries to Asia where it was renamed “Dragonfruit”. Pitaya fruit is naturally low in sugar yet packed full of antioxidants, fiber, magnesium and vitamin B. Not only is it Raw, but it is also Vegan, Kosher, Gluten and Dairy free to satisfy all dietary needs. All you need to do is put it in a blender and voila! The vibrant pink created by the fruit even makes it a fun tasty treat for kids.

What inspires me most to promote this product is not just the nutritional value, but the morals of the company, Pitaya Plus. Every smoothie pack of Pitaya sold helps to promote sustainable farming and to create jobs in poverty stricken areas of Central America. Pitaya Plus also operates out of one of the only solar-powered facilities in Central America. For more information on this company you can visit their website : www.pitayaplus.com

In the meantime, stop by the store and grab some pitaya packs! It is located in the freezer section by the frozen fruit.

Thanks for reading, and if you have tried this product, please leave us feedback! We love reading and hearing what you think.

New products: Dua Dua Coconut Products

By: Allison Carpenter; Community Outreach

Great news for all you coconut lovers out there; we have new coconut products in our grocery department from Dua Dua Coconut Products. Dua Dua is a sustainable company with their process starting in a small village in the Solomon Islands, South Pacific where the coconuts are picked and then shipped to Portland to be processed in small batches into several types of coconut products ranging from raw oil, a decadent syrup, to soaps and detergent. According to Dua Dua, they “are 3rd generation Coconut farmers [who] decided to increase employment opportunities for local villagers via downstream processing of coconut products.  [They] provide high quality, natural, healthy coconut based products while providing income opportunities that would not otherwise exist and for the remote villagers of Solomon Islands, South Pacific.”

Dua Dua Coconut Products use pure raw coconut oil sourced from high quality, cruelty free organic coconuts and is extracted through a centrifuge process that doesn’t heat the oil above 113 degree F, making this a truly raw oil. Great for those of you on the paleo or anyone simply looking to eat cleaner, healthier fats. Coconut oil is loaded with LCFAs, one of the most nutritious types of fats out there, and has long been regarded as a sacred food by indigenous peoples where coconut has naturally grown for thousands of years.

All in all, we love that this company is working towards sustainability, environmentally and economically, while simultaneously producing pure organic and all natural coconut products that are safe and effective. We’re carrying Dua Dua Raw Coconut oil in 16 oz jars, Dua Dua all natural Laundry Bar & Stain Remover, and Dua Dua Bulk Laundry detergent.

Check them out in our grocery department and let us know what you think about this product and the brand in the comments below!

Our Picks and Tips for School Lunch

By: Allison Carpenter; Community Outreach

School is almost back in session! And that means….duh duh duh….lunch.

It's no secret among my friends that I am a huge advocate for a home packed lunch. As parents, we are naturally concerned with the nutrition content of our children’s food and whether or not they are eating the right amounts of it. Packing a lunch puts us more in control of what our children eat. Furthermore, allowing our kids to be a part of the packing and picking process makes them more excited about eating their food.

We here at Berryvale understand the concerns of parents. Parents want to give their kids the nutrition they need, but don’t want them to hate their food. Our children, just like us, want to feel good about the foods they put in their body. So with the help of our Grocery Buyer, Mariah, we have put together our top picks for school lunches, along with some tips to help pick the right mix of foods.

Mix it up and Educate!

Children need balanced nutrition. Mixing up their lunches with a variety of food groups makes their lunch more balanced. Consider a protein, carbohydrate, healthy fats, fruit, and veggies. In produce, we have broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini, carrot sticks, celery, avocado, and cherry tomatoes. You can add leafy greens to sandwiches or to homemade berry smoothies (made with Earthbound frozen organic Mixed Berries found in the freezer section). Bananas and apples are always a favorite with young children. We have bags of pink lady apples on sale that make buying apples inexpensive and easy. For dairy, we offer Organic Valley Stringles string cheese—a personal favorite of my daughter—or varieties of yogurts.

Talking with your children about nutrition and teaching them along the way helps them understand why they eat the foods they do. Explaining the power and impact that food has on our bodies and the way proper nutrition can give us the fuel we need to do the things we love will resonate with your kids. Make education fun by using analogies your child can understand at their unique stage in development. As parents, we have so much power in how our children perceive the world around them, and our most powerful tool is education.

Pick What Your Kids love!

What do your kids love? Do they love Pb&J? Turkey sandwiches? Avocados? Cherry tomatoes? Apples? Bananas? Ask them what their favorite food is in each food group and add it to your shopping list. We carry many healthy offerings, including varieties of organic jams, nut and seed butters, cereals, organic produce, dairy products, raw and dehydrated foods, organic and all natural lunch meats, eggs, and breads. Best of all, we do our best to mix up our sales to help make these products more affordable. If your child has certain food allergies, look for alternatives such as sunflower seed butter, gluten free breads and yogurts made with coconut milk. We carry a wide assortment of foods for a variety of dietary needs; from gluten and dairy free, nut free, vegan, to paleo.

Make it Healthy, But Give Them a Treat

Including something sweet doesn’t have to make you feel uncertain and guilty. Add treats that are healthy and well-rounded without additives and laboratory ingredients. Choose, for example, sweetened nut butters like Justin’s Chocolate Hazlenut Butter, or chunks of dark chocolate added to a mixture of nuts and seeds for a yummy trail mix. This month, Uncle Eddies Cookies are on sale, with plenty of options from chocolate chip, peanut butter, and oatmeal. We also have on sale Qia nutrition bars in varieties of kid friendly flavors, and Annies organic Bunny Fruit Snacks. If you would prefer to limit sugar, check out our bulk bins and dehydrated fruits, or our assortment of raw treats made with purer sweeteners like honey, dates or fruit juice. Hail Mary’s, found in the refrigerated section, has some tasty tarts and macaroons that are vegan and gluten and dairy free, and are, best of all, kid friendly.

Pack a Well Rounded Snack

I don’t know about you, but around mid-morning I get hungry; and of course so do our kids! A well rounded, healthy snack in between meals can boost energy and help your kids make it to lunch time without uncomfortable hunger pains. That, and with the proper nutrition, can give your kids the concentration they need to focus on school work. Choosing proteins, such as nuts (check out our bulk section!), cheese, yogurt, or nutritional drinks (such as Orgain Healthy Kids Nutritional Shakes), and adding them to your child’s lunch pack for a snack offers your child a well-rounded nutritional boost at a much needed time.

Have Fun!

Making fun shapes out of lunch foods and letting your kids be a part of the preparation process makes lunch fun for them! To make it even easier on yourself, you can prepare the lunch in the evenings before bed and leave it in the fridge for your kids to grab in the morning.

You can, for example, make PB&J “sushi”, spell out fun messages with sauces, prepare a homemade treat and wrap it in something special, add a special note, or cut your simple lunch dishes into fun shapes. Getting creative makes lunch time fun for kids and encourages them to eat every last bite. What would you rather eat: a boring carrot stick on a lunch tray or a carrot “octopus” crafted by your loving and doting parent?

Lunch doesn’t have to be boring or stressful. You’ll find the more time you take carefully choosing foods your child loves and exploring ways to make lunch more exciting for them will actually reduce the amount of stress you feel over your child’s lunch. Working with and teaching your child to prepare their foods with you can be a great bonding experience and teaches kids valuable life skills in a way that brings them joy and warm memories.

For more creative ideas on kid's lunches, follow our Pinterest Board: Creative Foods for Kids

Well, that's it for now. Although with this topic there is so much information to share! Now we'd like to hear from you. What are your child’s favorite lunch foods? What combination of foods do you pack your child to give them the well-rounded nutrition they need? What treats do you add to your child’s lunchbox? And what of these products have you tried and how did you like them?

Comment below and let us know!

Thanks for reading our blog. Hopefully we gave you some ideas and some food for thought!

Back to School Nutritional Beverages

Hello everyone! It’s me, Katie,

Back to school is an exciting time for us parents. As a full time working mom, I sometimes struggle with planning my kid’s lunches. I want to make sure they have a balanced meal that gets them through the long school day. A lot of times when they come home, I see the leftovers from my well planned meal and it’s usually the carrot sticks and the healthy tid-bits I tried to sneak in there. This year instead of stressing the issue, I have found a great solution. The Orgain Healthy Kids Nutritional Shake. They come in 3 flavors: Strawberry, Chocolate, and Vanilla. These shakes offer well rounded nutrition and are gluten free. They combine 10 different fruits and veggies, and get organic complex carbohydrates from brown rice. They have 23 vitamins and minerals, and 8 grams of organic protein. The best part is, they will be on sale here at Berryvale Grocery for the rest of August!

I am going to be sure to stock up now, and have a worry free send off the first day of school. Good luck to all of you parents out there, and feel free to let me know what you think about these shakes in the comments below!
